Nikhil Autar, a trailblazing doctor, accessibility pioneer, and former NSW Young Australian of the Year, has passed away at the age of 32. Autar's remarkable life was marked by resilience and achievement, despite facing significant health challenges. He was diagnosed with leukemia at 17, underwent chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants, and open heart surgery, yet he persevered to graduate from medicine at Western Sydney University and be named NSW Young Australian of the Year for 2024. Autar's impact extended beyond his medical career. He developed the phone app Knia (Know In Advance) Maps to enhance accessibility for people with disabilities, mapping accessibility at major Sydney hospitals, universities, public venues, transport, and small businesses. He also founded Bheem Health, a social enterprise providing low-cost medical devices to sick and vulnerable individuals. His first device, BheemUP, converted any bed into a hospital bed, and another project introduced a world-first sensor mat to track sleep phases and minimize pressure sores for patients. Autar raised nearly $500,000 for pressure sore and medical device research. His contributions were recognized by Professor Richard Scolyer and his wife, Dr. Katie Nicoll, who praised Autar's determination, courage, humility, and sense of humor. The couple met Autar and his family at the 2024 NSW Australian of the Year Awards and spent time with them in Canberra.
